The parish church of Santa Maria, which was originally also dedicated to St John the Baptist, dates back to the 12th century. It is the oldest and most important church in Vicopisano and the only one of the five churches that originally existed in the village. The interior of the church is divided into three naves by two rows of six columns: These medieval columns are made of grey freestone; the first, third and last on the left are made of grey freestone and come from buildings dating back to Roman times. Parts of thirteenth-century frescoes depicting scenes from the Gospel have been preserved on the walls. In the apse is the majestic wooden group of the Descent from the Cross, which dates back to the first twenty years of the thirteenth century.
